Coaches Corner

Players and parents,

Our first game is upon us. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to it, although I wish we would have had a few more practices under our belt. Players are to be dressed and ready 15 minutes prior to every game, and 10 minutes prior to every practice. All of our 6:00pm Berry practices and 9:00am Lakeview practices have open ice before us, so with only 12 practices left we can get an extra two hours of free ice.

Our constantly changing schedule is on our team website. Some changes have already been made and more are coming. Mites are allowed forty games and four tournaments throughout the season. We are probably going to max out on both. Tentative tournament schedule is:
Cabin Fever Trnt. - Soo, MI  1/21/10 - 1/24/10 (5 games max.)
Mitefest Trnt. - Green Bay  2/5/10 - 2/7/10 (3 games)
Iron Range Trnt. - Negaunee  2/12/10 - 2/14/10 (5 games max.)
Marquette Trnt.  2/26/10 - 2/28/10 (5 games max.)

As you can see, we could have 18 tournament games added to our existing 20 game schedule. Tournament cost and lodging info will be available soon.

As for your kid playing hockey on my team, this is Mite hockey. I believe every player should learn and play every position. With an odd number of players, if your player plays every third shift in one game, they will play every other shift in the next game. Penalties and power plays make it harder to do, but I will try my best to have equal ice for everyone. In 12 years of baseball coaching and 5 years of hockey, I do keep a paper trail of who plays where, when, and for how long.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered to help out this season. With the work spread around it makes things easier, and hopefully will benefit the players the most. My goal this year is for everyone to have fun, and for the players to be better skaters, better and smarter hockey players, and to love the game even more than they do now.

If you have any comments, suggestions, or complaints, be gentle but let me know.

  • #1 Priorty - Having fun and learning skating / hockey fundamentals.
  • Looking forward to an enjoyable season. Off ice activities (coaches are open to suggestions) are good team building experiences.
  • Players are to arrive 30 minutes early for both practices AND games.
  • Coach time will be 15 minutes prior to each game and 10 minutes after the game (no parents in locker room).
  • Should parents have any concerns, please speak with the Coaches one-on-one. This is more polite and professional.
  • Team Manager will work to coordinate Tournaments. The Coaches are currently reviewing various Tournament options.
